MS Bard is a hybrid-powered boat that is packed with the greenest technology available on the market. We arrive in Barentsburg where it will be time on our own to explore this fascinating Russian settlement. With its 600 inhabitants, Barentsburg is Svalbard’s second largest settlement and at the same time a small part of Russia.
The mining community is located by the beautiful Grønfjord, and is run and owned by a state-owned Russian mining company. There is a separate coal power plant, hospital, hotel, school, kindergarten and culture and sports building.
If the weather allows it, we will also drive to the Esmark Glacier, or into Borebukta which is a famous haunt for walruses. On the trip there will also be a chance to see polar bears!
NB! The stop in Barentsburg is subject to the situation having changed in relation to Russia. As of March 2022, visits have been stopped indefinitely.
The afternoon is at your disposal. Svalbard is VAT-free so you can make good purchases on both hiking clothes and other things up here! At the local Coopen is the world’s northernmost wine monopoly – the North Pole where you can buy goods at tax-free prices.
There will also be an offer of a voluntary visit to Svalbard Brewery for beer tasting.
Dinner in the evening.
